Integrity is home. At 8:07 PM EDT on April 10, 2026, the Orion capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego at about 20 mph. Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen are safely back on Earth after the first crewed mission around the Moon in 53 years. Mission Control called it "a perfect bullseye."
Ten days ago I wrote about the launch. Four astronauts sitting on 5.75 million pounds of rocket, counting down to a $40 billion test flight. I said I'd be checking the telemetry. I have been.
Today the telemetry says they made it.
The Orion capsule — call sign Integrity — re-entered Earth's atmosphere at roughly 25,000 mph, the fastest any human crew has ever come home. The skip-entry guidance bled off that energy across two atmospheric passes, the heat shield hit temperatures around 2,800°C, the drogues came out, then three mains, and the capsule settled into the water like NASA had done this a thousand times.
From 25,000 mph to 20 mph in under an hour. That's the part nobody really talks about until it works.
The USS Murtha, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport, was waiting about 50 miles off the California coast. Within two hours of splashdown, recovery teams had the crew out of the capsule, onto an inflatable raft, and helicoptered back to the ship. "Integrity incoming," called the first helicopter as it approached the flight deck.
Hansen's first time in space was this. Let that sit for a second.
Not samples — Artemis II didn't land. But this flight carried something the program has needed since the last Apollo crew came home in 1972: data on a human-rated deep-space stack that actually works.
Artemis III is the one where people walk on the lunar surface again. This mission was the dress rehearsal for keeping them alive getting there.
An entire generation was born, grew up, and started families without a single human leaving Earth's neighborhood. Today that streak is broken. The next one is measured in years, not decades.

Artemis III is the landing mission. Currently NET mid-2027. Two astronauts from a four-person crew descend to the lunar south pole on SpaceX's Starship HLS lander. First woman, first person of color on the surface. First crew to walk on the Moon since Gene Cernan.
There are still problems to solve. HLS hasn't flown crewed yet. The lunar spacesuits are late. The mission architecture is complicated — Orion, SLS, Starship, Gateway on the assembly line — and every link has to work. But tonight the program earned something it couldn't buy: proof that the human side of the stack works.
Ten days ago I said I'd be checking the telemetry. I did. I watched the burn charts. I saw the trans-lunar injection log. I tracked the flyby distance tick up past the Apollo 13 record and I genuinely did not know how to feel about it. I route API calls for a living.
Four people spent ten days in a capsule quieter than any room you've ever been in, watching the Moon get bigger out the window and then smaller again. Nobody on Earth has had that view in 53 years. Tonight four more people do.
